About Wildberry Picnic
Hi! I'm Laura Hippensteel Murray: painter, drawer, sewer, crafter and overall DIY-er. My experience in the arts goes back to childhood, professionally growing to over 15 years experience with art exhibitions and commissioned work. I pursued a dual-degree in Fine Arts and Psychology from the University of Arizona before moving to Portland in 2011. I'm fortunate to collaborate with many like-minded small business owners in the area, and learn what it takes to find my way into the world of selling handmade goods.
Wildberry Picnic was inspired after getting the sewing bug, and needing to share more with the world than paintings and drawings. I learned on Grandma's Singer Creative Touch Fashion Machine model 1036 - phew that baby was a classic! It didn't take long to invest in updated equipment, and spend way too much money on fabric and supplies.
As someone who is of the age where marriages and new babies fill the news feed, I wanted to offer items that took into consideration the satisfaction of both parents and kiddos. My mission is to keep functionality and versatility as a priority, while producing colorful, carefully handmade items. That's why you'll see a lot of reversible clothing, and items that are multi-functional, easy to care for, and practical for a busy family. I'm excited to expand my craft to now offer paintings, drawings, decor items, quilts, and children's gear and clothing.
All of my products are compliant according to regulations put forth by the Consumer Product Safety Commission; my clothing is made from 100% cotton, polyester thread and natural, untreated notions. At this time, quilts are sold to Oregon residents only.

What does it mean to be CPSC compliant? The Consumer Product and Safety Commission (CPSC) has regulations for small business manufacturers regarding materials and methods of producing items for sale to the general public. This is particularly important for children's products, as it requires compliance with regards to buttons and snaps, lead, flammability and BPA testing for fabrics, as well as tracking and certifying each item that is sold.
Since learning about CPSC rules and regulations, I put everything on hold and took about 6 weeks to get my business status, inventory and production methods in order. You can read more about CPSC compliance here. |
Do you have an Etsy page?At this time I've chosen not to compete in the Etsy world for a few reasons:

How do I know which size to order?I'm happy to help you figure out a size that would work best for your kiddo. Look for the measurements in each product listing, along with photos of each item. Measurements are based on your kiddo, not the finished product.
Why are your quilts only sold in Oregon?Under federal regulations, bedding, upholstery and nearly anything stuffed is required to be registered and contain a permanent law label. Those are the large obnoxious tags that you usually see as reading "This tag may not be removed under penalty of law except by the consumer."
As an Oregon resident, I learned that the state of Oregon currently does not have Law Label requirements for manufacturers, but 31 other states do. I would unfortunately have to register in those states that I would want to sell to in order to legally sell quilts, tummy pillows, stuffed toys, etc. outside the state of Oregon. |
Can I request a custom piece?Of course. There are listings in my product store that say "made to order" -- let's start there. If you're thinking of a different style than one I currently offer, I'd love to work with you to figure out how I can help by incorporating a specific idea, style or print into a piece that you'll love. Please keep in mind that I cannot accommodate licensed prints nor anything with glitter or metal. Why? One would legally have to pay to use a licensed print, which you can imagine is unreasonable for a small batch manufacturer. No one wants to pay off Disney or Universal Studios to make cute dresses and rompers!
Glitter or metal is subject to lead testing -- if it's on a fabric, it needs to be certified to be digitally printed and subsequently part of the fabric, so that it does not have a risk of flaking. There may be additional pricing for more intricate pieces or styles in which I have to purchase a special pattern or fabric. |
